(Sword dance by Buddha incarnate Demon/Ogre)
Onikennbai, long inherited in IWASAKI district, is said to have originated from the Nenbutsu Folk Dance (Buddhist enlightenment dance) which goes back to the 8th century (another legend says early 9th century). This “Oni” (Demon/Ogre) has no horns, since it represents an incarnation of Buddha.
With the passing of the years, this time-honored performance praying for divine protection has permeated into the people of neighboring districts. Currently, well-practiced groups of 13 Onikenbai preservation associations, mostly in Kitakami city and in the surrounding areas, are performing in various places including foreign countries, and show grand displays at Kitakami-Michinoku-matsuri (Kitakami-Michinoku festival) in August together with some 100 traditional arts groups (https://geinoumatsuri.com/gaiyou/). It is also performed at Oni-no-Yakata Museum periodically. Furthermore, a few more groups of like-minded people are practicing Onikenbai in other cities.
